ONE PILLAR PAGODA IN HANOI

One pillar pagoda, or Chua Mot Cot in Vietnamese, was built in 1049 under Ly Dynasty. The pagoda is supported by one pillar in the middle of a square lake dotted by lovely lotus flowers blooming in summer time.

The pagoda worship Goddess of Mercy. We can reach Buddha's altar by passing through steps made of brick. According to a myth, King Ly Thai Tong dreamed that he had met Goddess of Mercy seating on the lotus throne, handed him a male child. Later on he told mandarins about his dream. They advised the King to build a pagoda that shaped lotus flower in the middle of a pond.

Mandarins set up a platform, chanted prayers with the purpose of worshiping long live for the King. Next to One pillar pagoda is Dien Huu pagoda that mean long live.
